2017 Fall LEAPs Camp at Putnam County Schools

Last Updated by Kate Spears on

On this week's Get Ready To Learn radio show, join Cindy Putman RTL and Brenda Hughett, Extended Learning Coordinator for Putnam County Schools, as they discuss the programs, activities, and opportunities that are happening with the LEAPs program.  Putman and Hughett discuss the upcoming LEAPs Camp that will take place the first week of October at Jere Whitson Elementary School. This camp is open to all students enrolled in leaps kindergarten through sixth grade in Putnam County.

Hughett and Putman note that one positive aspect of the LEAPs program is the way that it aligns with the Putnam County School System’s mission to service the whole child. From the leaders who guide the programs to the staff members who work with the students, each member of the LEAPs team is committed to serving the needs of the children in the program. What’s more, each staff worker is intentionally trained to work with children and meet their academic, social, and emotional needs. Putman is happy to partner with Hughett and utilize all the great PBS KIDS materials that are created for this before and after school program.

This year’s LEAPs camp at Jere Whitson Elementary School will focus around two PBS Kids properties: Odd Squad You Be the Agent Camp and the brand new Ruff Ruffman Science Camp. Hughett and Putman received special hands-on training to implement the Ruff Ruffman materials and expose children to science inquiry.

In meeting the needs of the whole student, seeing that their physical needs are being met is extremely important. Each morning before school, breakfast is provided for the students who attend the LEAPs sessions and a super snack is provided in the afternoon. The 2017-2018 school year has been affected by budget cuts from the after school programs funds that were distributed nationally, but we are grateful for the opportunity to continue these services, which positively impact the lives of students in the Upper Cumberland.

Currently there are 15 schools in Putnam County that offer LEAPs free to students before and after school.
