Spotlight on Shaquawana Wester & Make A Difference Day 2017 - Oct. 28th

Posted by Kate Spears on

This week on WCTE’s Get Ready To Learn radio show, join Cindy Putman and Shaquawana Wester, Youth Programs Coordinator at Highlands Residential Services as they discuss the upcoming event taking place in Cookeville on Make A Difference Day.

National Make A Difference Day is an annual community service event which is held on the fourth Saturday in October. This year our local event will take place on October the 28th from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Jefferson Ave. Church Recreation Building.

This is the 6th year of this annual event in the Upper Cumberland and Shaquawana shares how it came as a desire of her heart to help those who are struggling and are in need of shelter and clothing.

Shaquawana is joined by Misty Parker who will be distributing backpacks for the homeless population in the Upper Cumberland area. With all the natural disasters that have been occurring recently this year donations have been less  than in the past years.

Shaquawana believes this is because our community has such a giving heart and has been giving to families across the United States who are affected by floods and fires. Putman discusses how even a small donation can make a huge difference in someone's life.

Below is a list of items that are still needed to provide for those who struggle in our community.

  • Children's coats

  • women's hygiene products

  • Chapstick

  • Gloves

  • Blankets

  • Men's and women's socks

  • wet wipes

  • individual snacks or food items that don’t require can opener or microwave

  • kleenex packs

  • ziplock bags

  • Raincoats

  • umbrellas
