Last Updated by Kate Spears on

Lots of exciting things are happening in the Upper Cumberland from an educational standpoint, and we hope you’ll tune in each Saturday morning on the WCTE Get Ready To Learn radio show to hear more!

WCTE Welcomes a Special Guest

Devon Steven, Director of Ready To Learn Community Engagement from the Corporation of Broadcasting in Washington D.C. recently joined WCTE’s Get Ready To Learn host Cindy Putman to discuss some of the wonderful educational initiatives and projects that are happening at WCTE.

Cindy and Devon discussed the Community Collaboratives for Early Learning and Media that is currently in year two with a collaboration between Putnam County Schools Extended Learning Program LEAPs and 21st Century and the Putnam County Library.

Devon also was able to attend two ScratchJr Family Creative Learning Workshops and meet our CC-ELM community members along with families and kids from the Upper Cumberland. Check out www.wcte.org/education for all your educational information needs or contact cputman@wcte.org.

WCTE has been a Ready To Learn Demonstration station and is eager to build on the work that was started during those rounds of funding from CPB and PBS. Ready To Learn is an effective children's media program targeted toward America's most at-risk kids, but made available to all families and children across the country. Ready To Learn's high-quality transmedia content is unparalleled in its impact, value and necessity. The math- and literacy-based educational programming created by Ready To Learn provides families with effective, non-commercial content that helps prepare kids for success in school.

The program is an innovative partnership between Congress, the U.S. Department of Education, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, PBS, WCTE Upper Cumberland PBS, as well the Putnam County Schools, and the Putnam County Library, two strong community-based partners.

Ready To Learn leverages the reach of public broadcasting to successfully move the needle in children's learning and provide unique educational safe havens for kids on TV, online, and on mobile devices.

WCTE Prepares for 2016 Stations of Imagination

Devon and Cindy discussed the history of Stations of Imagination and what the Johnston Family means to all of us at WCTE as well as around the Upper Cumberland.

One CC-ELM partner that will be at SOI is the Putnam County Library, with their Mobile Learning LAb of mini ipads loaded with PBS Kids apps. There are apps from your children’s favorite PBS kids shows, including ScratchJr, Peg+Cat, Wild Kratts, Martha Speaks, Nature Cat and many more. Check out all the free educational apps that are available at http://pbskids.org/apps/

Behind the Scenes at PBS Kids

Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes at PBS Kids when the shows are being created? Devon and Cindy also discuss more about this, as well as spotlighting the experts who work diligently to make sure that every PBS KIDS show is age appropriate and developmentally appropriate for the audience's enjoyment.

Devon shared how experts work together to create engaging entertaining content on air and online for families to enjoy with their young learners. If you are interested in seeing more about the research that goes into these programs check out PBS Kids lab and read the research that is shared.

Devon and Cindy also discussed their favorite PBS kids shows and Devon shared a story about how she was once able to wear Buddy the dinosaur costume from the PBS Kids show Dinosaur Train, and how excited folks of all ages are when they see the PBS kids characters up close and personal.

This weekend WCTE is committed to bringing quality hands-on educational kids activities to Stations of Imagination. Don’t forget Bob the Builder and Walkaround Sesame Street character Cookie Monster will be on hand to meet and greet all the young learners and their families across the Upper Cumberland.

WCTE is delighted to host this great event and Cindy and Devon encourage everyone to tour the STEM Mobile, stop and play some tennis at the LEAPs 21st Century booth, and use the mini iPads at the PCL booth.

Don’t forget to stop by the main stage and get your picture made with Cookie Monster and Bob.
