On this edition of WCTE's Get Ready To Learn radio show, host Cynthia Putman sits down with Katelyn Steakley to chat about a nonprofit organization impacting the lives of children and families in the Upper Cumberland.
Katelyn Steakley, along with her friend Ashely Swann, had an idea that started as a mom's bible study and has now grown into a nonprofit organization that currently provides food for 430 children across Putnam County.
Food to the Rescue (learn more at foodtotherescue.org/), began as a conversation that Ashley had with a public school teacher about her students who did not have adequate food during times when school was not in session.
The idea was born to gather donations of food and deliver it to these children. The ladies started out with 20 kids and the project grew to include feeding 430 children in summer of 2018.
FTTR now has 501c3 status and partners with local businesses, volunteers, and delivery persons to assist in distributing meals to children enrolled in the program.
According to recent studies, one in five children in Middle Tennessee does not know the source of his or her next meal. There is a significant food insecurity issue in the Putnam County community. The goal of FTTR is to ensure that time away from school does not cause our local children to go hungry.
