This week on our WCTE Get Ready To Learn radio show, host Cynthia Whittaker Putman welcomes Stephens Center Executive Director, Dawn Raines and Healthy Families Program Supervisor Lisa Mcafee as they share about all the free services the Stephens Center provides to families, new mothers, or grandparents raising children.
Two programs provided by the Stephens Center are Healthy Start and Healthier Beginnings, which are home-visitation programs designed to help Pre-natal, First-time and Teen Parents give their children a Healthier Beginning. Through weekly home-visits, the Stephens Center staff members provide emotional support and help parents learn practical skills to cope with the new job of parenting.
Healthy Start and Healthier Beginnings emphasize a nurturing relationship between parent and child, developmental activities and screenings, immunizations, well-child check-ups, and school readiness. GKI evidenced based ciriculum is utilized and all staff is highly trained.
The Stephens Center’s Healthy Start and Healthier Beginnings programs are research-based and proven effective. The center has been accredited since 2011 through Healthy Families America, a program of Prevent Child Abuse America.
The Stephens Center provides Healthy Start in Macon, Putnam, and White Counties and Healthy Beginnings in Cumberland and Dekalb Counties.
Throughout the year, The Stephens Center also conducts activities to educate the community about the programs they offer, about better parenting, and about recognizing and reporting child abuse.
Examples of the Stephens Center’s Community Awareness Program activities include their annual Blue Ribbon Memorial Tree projects, presentations to school, civic, church and business groups, special training seminars, Volunteer Parent Aide training, and public service announcements and articles.
During the past year, 42 presentations were made to 1,931 adults and 555 children. A Community Awareness Program training or presentation can be scheduled by contacting The Exchange Club/Stephens Center for the Prevention of Child Abuse. Please consider the Stephens Center in your program planning!
