This week on our WCTE Get Ready To Learn radio show, host Cynthia Whittaker Putman welcomes back guest Katelyn Steakley, whose work with Food to the Rescue is changing lives of families in the Upper Cumberland.

Food to the Rescue is a multi-denominational Christian organization now comprised of local churches, business, and citizens of Putnam County working together to make sure no child the community is hungry.

What started as an effort to feed 30 kids has grown to feed more than 575 kids and more than 190 families.

September is Hunger Action month and this month Food to the Rescue is doing its yearly Peanut Butter Drive. During September, Food to the Rescue is collecting 3600 jars of peanut butter!

Food to the Rescue has also partnered with local blogger Kris of Eat It Whole. She has collected more than 130 slow cookers to share with the families FttR assists.

In additional to peanut butter, they are also collecting the following spices/condiments to help these families create healthy and delicious meals:

  • Dill
  • Garlic
  • Cumin
  • Curry
  • Bay Leaf
  • Salt & Pepper
  • Yellow Mustard
  • Soy Sauce
  • Honey
  • Cornstarch

Want to support by donating? Drop off a jar of peanut butter or a jar of spices at Zimmer Broadcasting, First National Bank or Swallows Insurance offices in Cookeville.

Who is eligible for meals from Food to the Rescue? Any child who meets the following criteria will be accepted in the program:

  • Lives within Putnam County
  • Under the age of 18 but over the age of one year
  • Living in a food insecure household
  • No unrestrained or aggressive animals on the property

When do deliveries occur? Deliveries and or pick up will occur during the Putnam County academic calendar school breaks. The next delivery event is October 3rd for Fall Break.

How can you help/get involved? Volunteers are vital to the success of Food to the Rescue. The organization is in need of volunteers to donate their time to assist in delivering the food to the children's homes as well as un-boxing, packing, and organizing the food bags to go out for delivery. If you have a child or know a child who you believe would benefit from Food to the Rescue, visit Food to the Rescue to learn more.
