This week on our WCTE Get Ready To Learn radio show, host Cynthia Whittaker Putman welcomes guest Randy Dodson to talk about SeedFork of the Highlands’ 4th annual Farm to Fork Dinner and the First 1000 Days project.

The First 1000 Days is an inspiring and sometimes heartbreaking book by Roger Thurow that takes us into the lives of families on the forefront of the movement to illuminate the science, economics, and politics of malnutrition.

Thurow, an expert on agricultural development, was a recent guest speaker at the World Food & Society Class at Tennessee Tech University

The book charts the progress of this global effort and the formidable challenges it still faces: economic injustice, disease, lack of education and sanitation, misogyny, and corruption.

SeedFork is starting its own First 1,000 days program in Cookeville and guests at the upcoming Farm to Fork Dinner will hear more about this, including the impact that nutrition plays for a mother and child in the first 1,000 days.

The event will be a celebration of all things local, including local farmers, food, chefs, food entrepreneurs, musicians, and more!

It includes,

  • A four-course gourmet meal composed of seasonal foods from our area
  • Wines, beers, and non-alcoholic drinks from local drink vendors
  • Live music by a Cookeville favorite, Heart and Soul
  • Presentations about local farmers and food entrepreneurs in our community
  • An opportunity to mingle with like-minded community members who share a passion for local food

Tickets are available at seedfork.eventbrite.com.

And don’t forget to visit the The Downtown Green Market, a local market selling organic produce, responsibly raised meat, dairy, and artisan crafts at the corner of Dixie and Broad every Saturday morning!
