Cookeville- WCTE’S Annual Academic Bowl Tournament will be held Saturday, March 7, 2020 from 8:00am-4:00pm. The event will take place at Tennessee Tech University’s Backdoor Playhouse at 805 Quadrangle Dr. This is a new venue for the Academic Bowl. We are excited to be working with Backdoor Playhouse and using their location this year. Approximately 63 students will participate in a single elimination tournament that day. This event is a test of their knowledge in all areas from history, math, science, etc. Our partnership with TTU gives high school students an opportunity to visit a college. Students also get to meet TTU professors and community helpers that volunteer to help with the event.
“In the 35 years since we have been doing Academic Bowl, we have seen it grow outside the Upper Cumberland Area. We have added teams from as far away as Scott County, AL. We are proud to have teams from Cookeville HS, Gallatin HS, White County HS, Upperman HS, Cumberland County HS, Oneida HS, Scott HS, Warren County HS, and Alvin C York Institute” Said Reggie Brown, WCTE Education & Community Engagement Associate.
For the first time this year WCTE will be livestreaming the event. To view the livestream, go to wcte.org/academicbowl. Academic Bowl episodes will air on WCTE on Thursdays at 7:00 pm beginning March 26 to April 9. Encore episodes will air Fridays at 5:00 starting March 27. Sunday April 12 at 4:30 the two semi-finals and the final game will be shown.
Prizes are awarded to 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th place. In addition, the high school that exemplifies good team manners, will receive the “Dr. Fred Culp Spirit Award”.
